The spread of terrorism in the country’s northwestern region led to the rise of vigilante groups, some of whom came to be known as Yan Sa Kai. This led to repeated attacks on innocent Fulani, an ethnic group that has been fingered to be a powerhouse for many terrorists over time. Here, The Crisis Room speaks with Umar Yandaki, a journalist who has been on the trail of such happenings in the region and is currently a doctoral researcher at the Department of History, Northwestern University, USA, where he is exploring historical memory and the politics of erasures in Northern Nigerian Historiography.
